How to Post Notes on the Desktop

Taking notes can help you remember important events or tasks that must be accomplished. You can write out a physical note and stick it on the side of your computer, but that can get messy and waste paper. If you have Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Mac OS X, you can create digital sticky notes that appear on your desktop, serving as a reminder without the waste.

Instruction

Windows Vista

1 Open the "Sticky Notes" program by clicking the "Start" button.

2 Type "Sticky Notes" into the search box, and click the program that appears from the search.

3 Type in the note or notes you need to remember in the digital sticky note.

4 Go to "Tools" and then "Options." From the menu, select "Always on top." This will ensure the sticky note stays visible on your desktop.

Windows 7

1 Click the "Start" button. Type the words "Sticky Notes" into the search box.

2 Click on the "Sticky Notes" program that pops up from your search.

3 Select "New Note" and type in your note. The note will remain visible on the desktop until deleted. To delete, click the "Delete Note" button located on the specific note you want to erase. Confirm the deletion and the note will disappear.

Mac OS X

1 Press "F4" on your keyboard. This will open the widget screen directly on your desktop.

2 Click the "+" sign at the bottom-left of the screen. This will open up a toolbar of all the available widgets.

3 Select the "Stickies" widget. Type any notes you need into the sticky note.

How to Use Post- it Notes

Post-It Notes have been around in several different forms since their introduction in 1974, and they're still in use in offices around the world. The inventor, Spencer Silver, originally didn't know what to do with his invention, but noticed a man in his church needed something sticky to keep his place in the hymnal and suggested his invention. Technology may have improved by leaps and bounds since their introduction, but this simple method of leaving reminders for yourself or others never went out of style. Using these office aids is simple, with the only complication being the quality of the surface where they're being placed.

Instruction

Basic Usage

1 Write your message on the Post-It note.

2 Remove the sticky note from the pad.

3 Affix the note to any clean surface.

Creative Uses

1 Use a Post-It note as a bookmark for any book or magazine. Stick a few Post-It notes to the inside of a folder or notebook for school so they'll be readily available in case you need them.

2 Stick a Post-It note with your shopping list on it directly on your cart handle to leave your hands free for shopping. Draw instructions for any problematic piece of office equipment on a Post-It note and leave it by the machine to help new workers.

3 Use the sticky edge of a Post-It note to clean between the keys on your keyboard. Draw your own flip story on a pad of Post-It notes and flip through the individual pages quickly to make your own flip book

How to Print Post-it Notes

The Windows Vista and Windows Seven operating systems include an application called post-it notes, or sticky notes. The application allows you to create a post-it note and stick it on your desktop. You can even change its color or size. Unfortunately, the application does not include a print option. Nevertheless, with a little creativity, you can print them in Windows Vista and Windows Seven

Instruction

•1.        Open the post-it note or notes you want to print. Click on the "Start" menu, then click "All Programs," "Accessories" and then "Sticky Notes."

•2.        Click on the post-it note.

•3.        Press "Alt" + "Print Screen." However, if you want to print more than one note, press "Print Screen." Note that the Print Screen button is abbreviated as PrtSc on most keyboards.

•4.        Open a blank canvas in an image-editing software program like Microsoft Paint.

•5.        Click on the blank canvas and press "Ctrl" + "V." The note or notes will appear on the canvas. You can use the image-editing software program to crop the image, if you desire.

•6.        Click "File," then "Print."

How to Make Post-It Notes in Photoshop

Post-it notes, also known as sticky notes, are a common office essential. While post-it notes are usually reserved for the office, you can use Photoshop to create a digital replica of them for a logo, a digital art project or just to enhance your graphic design abilities. You can also make the post-it note in the iconic yellow color, or you can switch it up and use another color such as blue or magenta

Instuction

•1.        Open Photoshop and click the "New" button, found in the top toolbar. This will open a menu, prompting you to make a digital canvas. Create one at any size and set the resolution either to 300 (for printing) or 72 (for Web use).

•2.        Go to the bottom of the left toolbar and you will see a square of color. Click it, and the "Color Picker" menu will open. Select the color you want to use for the post-it note.

•3.        Select the "Rectangle" tool (on left toolbar) and make a square in the digital canvas. To help constrain the shape to a square, hold the "Shift" button.

•4.        Select the "Pen" tool and create four points in the bottom-half of the square on both the left and right side.

•5.        Click the "Direct Selection" tool. Click both sides and drag them over (either to the left or right). This will give the note depth.

•6.        Click the "Burn" tool and use it on the top portion of the post-it note. This will make that portion darker and will represent the glue strip found on post-it notes.

•7.        Go to "Layer" and then "Layer Styles." Select "Drop Shadow" to add a shadow to the post-it note, giving it an even more realistic appearance. This will finish the post-it note.

How to Make Post-it Notes Crafts

Since their invention in 1980 by 3M scientists Arthur Fry and Spencer Silver, Post-it Notes have evolved significantly. With 57 colors, 27 sizes and 20 fragrances, Post-it Notes are seen in offices, schools and in your home. Besides being useful for taking messages or creating stick-on reminders, these versatile self-adhering notes can also be used in crafting. Because there are so many types of Post-it Notes available, they are ideal for creative projects.

Instruction

Post-it Note Earrings

•1.        Purchase a pack of thin, rectangular Post-it Notes. Take two notes and adhere them together back-to-back so that the adhesive on one note is at the top and the adhesive on the other is at the bottom. Repeat this for two other notes in the same color.

•2.        Cut off tiny random pieces, squares or circles from the adhesive part of another color Post-it Note. Adhere the pieces to one or both sides of the back-to-back notes in the pattern desired.

•3.        Brush a layer of acrylic varnish over each Post-it Note rectangle and allow it to dry. Acrylic varnish can be glossy, semigloss or matte, depending on your preference.

•4.        Poke a hole in the top center of both of the Post-it rectangles.

•5.        Hold a jump ring on one side with a pair of flat-nosed jewelry pliers. Grasp the other side of the jump ring with the other pair. Pull one side of the jump ring toward you and push the other side away to open the jump ring. Repeat this for another jump ring.

•6.       Loop one jump ring through the hole in the Post-it rectangle and the loop at the bottom of an earring hook. Grasp both sides of the jump ring with the pliers and push them closed. Repeat this process to make the opposite earring.

Post-it Note Mini-Calendar

•1.        Purchase a larger-sized pack of square Post-it Notes. Draw cute or funny pictures on each note. On the first note, write today's date beneath the picture, like January 1.

•2.        Continue writing dates on the Post-it Notes until each note has a coordinating day for the entire year.

•3.        Cut a piece of foam core board with a craft knife to the shape and size desired. Stick the Post-it Notes in the pattern desired, with the very last month being the first note you stick down. Layer the notes until the current date is at the top.

•4.        Remove each note as the days pass and discard them or keep them for next year.

Post-it Note Wall Decoration

•1.        Purchase Post-it Notes in various colors in bulk. Measure and mark a large square or rectangular area on your wall. Use a level to make the lines straight.

•2.        Stick painter's masking tape around the edges of the lines until you have a taped outline of the square or rectangle.

•3.        Choose a paint color that coordinates with your Post-it Notes. Paint within the painter's tape only, adding layers until the area is completely covered. Remove the tape carefully and allow the paint to dry.

•4.        Apply one line of Post-it Notes, as close together or far apart as desired, about 1/2-inch from the edges of the painted shape. Use the level to make the line straight.

•5.      Continue adding lines of Post-it Notes in different colors, stacking them or spacing them as desired. The result is an inexpensive, colorful wall mural.
