Ancestors of this model are an experimental batch of sports cars developed
for race.
The first prototype of the road model shown at the exhibition in New York
in 1954 immediately caused a sensation. No wonder, it was the first road
car with port injection! The car looked compact and stood out by its
individuality not only in structure, but also in design. The doors opened
upward, leaving a high threshold (560 mm from a road, contrary to usual
280-350 mm). It was rather problematic to enter and exit the car,
especially for women. However it did not prevent the famous Sofie Loren
to become the owner of one of the first 300 SL.
